What is a math co-processor?

A math co-processor, also known as a Floating Point Unit or FPU, is a special chip that dramatically speeds up working with floating point numbers.

Most computers sold in the last few years include a math co-processor.

The following computers contain math co-processors and are well suited for running Fractal eXtreme:

  • Pentium® Pro (P6) computers
  • Pentium (P5) computers
  • 80486DX computers
  • 80386 computers with 80387 co-processors
Most non-Intel® processors also have math co-processors

Although a math-coprocessor is not strictly necessary to run Fractal eXtreme, the performance is unlikely to be acceptable without one.

Although Fractal eXtreme makes use of floating point math, to simplify and accelerate fractal calculations, it is not limited to working with the precision of floating point numbers. Some of the fractals which Fractal eXtreme allows you to explore support over 2,000 decimal digits of precision -- enough for the most die-hard fractal explorer.
