Because the compression is tuned specifically for this purpose they are far more compact than animated GIFs, MPEG or other movie formats. One exceptionally compact movie covers a range of eighty zooms (that's ten to the 24th power, deeper than most fractal programs go), at 360 by 270, and is just 210K. Not bad for two minutes of animation!
